For anyone who has spent time on the lagoon over the past decade, the Mosquito Lagoon seagrass recovery is one of Florida’s most encouraging conservation success stories. After years of widespread seagrass loss caused by poor water quality, harmful algae blooms, hurricanes, and other environmental pressures, many areas are once again showing remarkable signs of recovery.
Why Mosquito Lagoon Seagrass Matters:
As water clarity has improved, sunlight is reaching the lagoon bottom, allowing seagrass to naturally recolonize areas where it had disappeared. These expanding grass beds are far more than underwater plants—they are the foundation of the lagoon’s ecosystem. Healthy seagrass provides critical habitat for shrimp, crabs, baitfish, seatrout, redfish, tarpon, manatees, and countless other species while stabilizing sediments, improving water quality, and helping maintain the clear, shallow flats that make the Mosquito Lagoon world-renowned.
Restoration Through Science and Partnership:
This recovery did not happen by accident. It reflects years of dedication by state and local governments, scientists, conservation organizations, volunteers, and the boating and fishing community. The St. Johns River Water Management District has played a significant role through projects designed to improve water quality, restore natural hydrology, reduce nutrient loading, expand scientific monitoring, and protect critical habitat throughout the Indian River Lagoon system. These efforts, combined with restoration work by numerous public and private partners, have helped create the conditions necessary for seagrass to return.
The progress we’ve witnessed demonstrates an important lesson: restoration takes patience, science, and sustained investment. Nature has an incredible ability to heal when given the opportunity.
Protecting the Lagoon’s Recovering Flats:
While there is still important work ahead, every new acre of seagrass is another step toward restoring one of Florida’s most treasured fisheries. As anglers and boaters, we also have a responsibility to protect these recovering flats by avoiding prop scars, using designated channels whenever possible, and respecting shallow-water habitats. Together, we can ensure the Mosquito Lagoon continues its remarkable comeback for generations to come.
Hell’s Bay Boatworks President Chris Peterson also serves on the Governing Board of the St. Johns River Water Management District.

Heading out for Independence Day, a weekend on the water, or any day that calls for red, white, blue, and a little saltwater grit? The Hell’s Bay Celebration of America Collection was made for those who would rather be poling a flat than sitting around talking about it.
This collection brings together patriotic Hell’s Bay apparel, accessories, and gear for skiff owners, anglers, guides, and anyone who believes the Stars and Stripes look right at home on the water.
Official Hell’s Bay Gear for America’s 250th:
America’s 250th celebration is a milestone worth marking the right way. For Hell’s Bay, that means gear built around the same spirit that has always shaped the brand: shallow water, craftsmanship, freedom, and time well spent outside.
From sunrise redfish and tarpon missions to sunset cookouts and fireworks, this collection fits right in on the skiff, at the ramp, around the dock, or wherever the day takes you.
Classic cuts. Bold designs. All-American grit.
Made for the Boat, the Truck, and the Weekend:
This merch and swag is made for those who believe a good design should look just as sharp on a truck, cooler, camera case, dock box, or skiff as it does around town.
Whether you’re repping your favorite Hell’s Bay skiff, loading up before daylight, or saluting the flag from the poling platform, the Celebration of America Collection brings patriotic style to every cast, every cookout, and every run across skinny water.
So, raise the flag. Set a hook. Make it a Hell’s Bay Celebration of America just in time for our 250th Birthday!
A boat does not go into the mold until an owner has told us exactly how they want it built. From there, our craftsmen bring that vision to life through every step of the build.
Each Hell’s Bay skiff is custom built to a singular standard.
To be a Hell’s Bay Skiff means to be handcrafted to tolerances unlike any other boat. These skiffs are made for the long haul. In fact, we are our own worst competition — a used Hell’s Bay skiff, if you can find one, is still a better boat than most.
We Don’t Take Orders, We Have Conversations:
Every build starts with a conversation.
Where do you fish? Who do you fish with? How do you like to fish? Side console or center console? Tiller? Fly, bait, or both?
Every angler and guide has their own preferences, and that is exactly how a Hell’s Bay is built. Together, we design a boat that fits your style, your needs, and your waters. Then we craft a vessel purpose-built for the way you fish.

Our friends at Flats Nation recently published a closer look at the Hell’s Bay Marquesa skiff and where it fits for anglers who want a larger technical flats platform with real shallow-water DNA.
Their overview covers the Marquesa’s shallow draft, confident ride, cockpit space, fuel capacity, and why this model remains a trusted choice for anglers who may pole a mangrove edge in the morning and cross open water before lunch.
Hell’s Bay Marquesa Skiff: A Larger Technical Skiff with Real Flats DNA:
The Marquesa was designed for anglers who often fish water that does not stay polite for very long.
One part of the day may involve poling quietly along a mangrove edge, and the next may require crossing open water, running through bay chop, or chasing tarpon along the beach. That is where the Marquesa has always made sense.
It gives anglers more beam, more cockpit space, more fuel capacity, and a more confident ride than many smaller technical skiffs, while still delivering the quiet shallow-water performance Hell’s Bay owners expect when the push pole comes down.
Why the Marquesa Still Stands Out:
The Flats Nation article highlights several important parts of the Marquesa story, including its larger technical-skiff footprint, its smooth ride in chop, its 28-gallon fuel capacity, and its ability to bridge the gap between open-water runs and technical sight-fishing. The Hell’s Bay Marquesa skiff fits anglers who need more room, more range, and more confidence when the weather or water conditions change.
Current Marquesa specifications include:
Length: 18’ 1”
Beam: 79”
Weight: 695 lbs.
Draft: 7” fully rigged
Capacity: 4
Power: 90-115 up to 150 HP with optional flotation
Fuel: 28-gallon powder-coated baffled aluminum tank
For many owners, that combination is exactly the appeal. The Marquesa is not trying to be the smallest skiff on the flat. It is built for anglers who want more room, more range, and more confidence when the day includes both skinny water and less-than-perfect conditions.
Built the Hell’s Bay Way:
Like every current Hell’s Bay skiff, the Marquesais built with serious materials, careful construction, and a purpose-driven layout.
Standard features include a Carbon Innegra hull, vacuum-infused Core Cell construction, a carbon-fiber stringer system, 100% vinyl ester resin, quiet dry hatches, under-gunwale rod storage, trim tabs, hydraulic steering, a plumbed livewell, and a custom aluminum trailer with spare tire, LED lighting, and custom walkboard.
That is the kind of detail serious anglers notice over time. Not just on the showroom floor, but years later at the ramp, on the pole, and during that afternoon ride home when the wind decides it has an opinion.
Read the Full Flats Nation Overview:
Flats Nation does a nice job breaking down where the Marquesa fits in the Hell’s Bay lineup and why it remains such a benchmark model for anglers who want a larger technical flats skiff with real open-water capability.
Ready to Start the Conversation?
At Hell’s Bay Boatworks, we do not build around a generic order sheet. We build around how you fish.
Where do you run? Who do you fish with? Do you prefer side console, center console, or tiller? Are you chasing tarpon, bonefish, redfish, snook, permit, or all of the above?
Those are the details that matter.
If the Marquesa sounds like the right fit for your water, give us a call or stop by. We will help you talk through the build and start shaping a skiff around the way you actually fish.
Hell’s Bay Boatworks World’s Finest Shallow Water Skiffs
A Flats Skiff is a shallow-draft fishing boat designed to hunt fish in skinny water—quietly, precisely, and with minimal disturbance. Think clean casting decks, an elevated poling platform, and a hull that can “ghost” over water that would stop most boats.
Flats Skiffs live for technical water—flats, mangroves, lagoons, marsh edges, and the places where sight fishing is the whole game.
What makes a boat a Flats Skiff?
A true flats skiff is about mission. Most share a handful of non-negotiable aspects such as:
1) Shallow draft and low profile
The point is access. Flats boats/skiffs are built to float and operate in very shallow water, which usually means a shallow-draft hull and a low profile for stealth and visibility
2) Poling platform (for sight fishing)
A raised platform at the stern gives the operator height to spot fish and guide the boat quietly in shallow water
3) Clean casting decks and line management
Flats skiffs prioritize open, uncluttered decks so fly line or spinning line doesn’t snag on hardware.
4) Quiet matters more than comfort
Hull slap, rattling hatches, loose gear—those are fish spookers and will flush fish out like a covey of quail. Modern designs fight noise with smarter hull shapes, better fit/finish, and details like spray rails and dry hatches.
5) Shallow-water rigging
Many flats skiffs are set up for a jack plate, trolling motor, and shallow-water anchoring systems because positioning is half the battle in wind and current
Flats skiff misconception: “flats” doesn’t mean “flat-bottom”
A flats skiff isn’t necessarily a flat-bottom boat. Many use modified-V and other hull forms to balance draft, ride, and performance. Lower deadrise typically reduces draft but can ride harsher in chop—so designs are always a compromise between skinny-water access and real-world ride.
Technical flats skiff: where “technical skiff” fits in
A technical skiff is essentially the specialist end of the flats-skiff family: lighter, cleaner, and more focused on shallow-water fishability than anything else. The layout tends to be simple on purpose—less weight, less clutter, less noise.
That “purpose-built tool” mindset is why many serious sight-fishermen care about details like draft, silence, layout, and build quality more than they care about comfort features.
How to choose the right Flats Skiff
Step 1: Be honest about your water
Mostly skinny flats/mangroves/marsh → prioritize draft, silence, and poling control.
Regular open-bay crossings → prioritize ride, dryness, and stability in wind/chop
Step 2: Crew size matters more than most people admit
If you fish solo or two-up, you can go more “technical.” If you regularly fish three or four people, prioritize room, balance, and storage so the boat stays fishable.
Step 3: Know what the specs actually tell you
Draft: shallow access potential (but remember—load and rigging matter).
Beam: stability and usable deck space.
Weight: affects draft, poleability, and efficiency.
Hull design: where the compromise lands between draft and ride.
Step 4: Match the boat to how you actually fish
Fly-heavy, line management critical → clean decks and minimal clutter.
Windy environments → stability and positioning systems matter.
Before you choose a flats skiff, it helps to understand where the category—and our approach to building skiffs—came from. This short film, Uncharted: The History of Hell’s Bay Boatworks, captures the roots of the boats and the people behind them, including one of our founders, the late Flip Pallot, and Pro Staff angler Capt. C.A. Richardson.
Flats Skiff FAQ
What is a flats skiff used for?
Primarily sight fishing in shallow water—poling quietly, spotting fish, and casting from clean decks in places most boats can’t reach.
How shallow can a flats skiff run?
It depends on hull design, rigging, load, and conditions, but flats skiffs are designed for very shallow-water operation and typically aim for shallow draft as a core feature.
Are flats skiffs good in rough water?
Some are built to handle chop better than others, but in general a flats skiff is optimized for shallow water and stealth more than comfort in big water. Bay boats—like the Estero—are typically built to ride open bays more comfortably.
Flats skiff vs flats boat — are they the same?
The terms are often used interchangeably. “Skiff” is sometimes used for simpler, more purpose-built shallow-water platforms, but the important factors are draft, layout, and mission.
Marine EVA foam reel pads are now part of the clean, functional details found on most current Hell’s Bay builds. Designed to give rods and reels a soft, finished place to rest, these pads add useful protection while also giving each skiff another place to carry the boat’s color theme.
For anglers who keep fly rods, spinning rods, or rigged outfits close at hand, small details matter. A reel pad may not be the first thing noticed from across the dock, but it is exactly the kind of detail an owner appreciates every time the boat is loaded, rigged, poled, and fished.
Built for Reel Protection and Daily Use
Placed where rods and reels are stored, the textured marine-grade foam creates a cushioned surface where reels can rest more securely than they would against hard fiberglass alone. It helps quiet contact points, keeps the layout cleaner, and gives the cockpit a more finished feel.
In a technical poling skiff, everything has a purpose. Rods need to be close. Reels need to be protected. The deck and cockpit need to stay clean and ready. These pads help support that simple, practical approach.
Custom Color Without Overdoing It
The newer reel pads are available in multiple color combinations, making it easier to match the overall build or introduce a subtle accent color.
Whether the boat is clean white, blue and gray, blacked-out, or finished with red accents, the reel pads can tie into the rest of the package without screaming for attention. The best custom touches usually do not shout. They just look right when you step aboard.
On the Eldora and Waterman, they remain available as an optional build item, giving owners another way to tailor the skiff to the way they fish and the look they want.
A Small Detail With a Lot of Purpose
At Hell’s Bay, finish work has always been about more than appearance. The goal is to make a skiff feel intentional from bow to stern.
These reel pads help protect gear, organize the cockpit, and add a sharp custom look — three wins from one practical piece of equipment.

Legendary angler Flip Pallot shares the history of Hell’s Bay Boatworks and the shallow-water skiffs that helped define a way of fishing. This video replaces our original 2015 YouTube upload, which developed audio damage over time. We restored it from our library so this story can continue to be heard the way it was meant to be.
There are voices in this sport that shaped everything we do today—and Flip Pallot is one of them.
This is more than a video. It’s a piece of history. Flip walks through the story behind Hell’s Bay—how shallow water, curiosity, and a refusal to accept limits led to a completely different way of fishing. A way that so many of us now take for granted.
He wasn’t just a fisherman—he was a storyteller, a teacher, and one of the people who defined what modern flats fishing looks like today.
If you care about:
• Where technical poling skiffs came from
• Why shallow water changed everything
• The mindset behind true exploration… this one is worth your time. Flip had a way of making you think about fishing—and life—a little differently. Watch it. Take something from it. And then go find your own water.

This is a huge win for Florida’s waters, but it’s not over yet. Legislative session continues through March 13th, and Captains for Clean Water will be watching with a close eye.
In Tallahassee this session, Captains For Clean Water secured a meaningful win for Florida’s waterways—and for the public’s right to speak plainly about threats to them—when Section 48 was removed from Senate Bill 290 (SB 290).
What Section 48 Would Have Done…
Section 48 was widely viewed as a “disparagement” provision that could have exposed individuals and organizations to legal action for publicly criticizing certain agricultural practices. Water advocates across the state warned that the language risked creating a chilling effect: even if someone ultimately prevailed in court, the financial burden and legal exposure could discourage guides, small businesses, scientists, and everyday citizens from speaking out about water-quality impacts.
For those who work on the water every day, transparency is not political—it is practical. When harmful discharges, nutrient loading, or algal blooms threaten estuaries and coastal fisheries, early public scrutiny is often the first step toward corrective action.
How the Win Happened!
Captains For Clean Water mobilized quickly and strategically. The organization activated its grassroots network, encouraged direct outreach to legislators, and participated in the committee process with focused, fact-based messaging. Rather than accepting assurances that the language might be “fixed later,” advocates pressed for its full removal.
That persistence paid off. Section 48 was ultimately stripped from SB 290, preserving Floridians’ ability to openly discuss environmental impacts without the looming threat of costly litigation. It was a clear example of civic engagement working as intended—citizens identifying a concern, lawmakers listening, and policy being adjusted before becoming law.
Why This Matters for Florida’s Economy
Florida’s economy is inseparable from clean water. Coastal tourism, sport fishing, boating, and marine manufacturing all depend on healthy estuaries and resilient fisheries. When water quality declines, the consequences ripple outward—impacting guides, hotels, restaurants, boat dealers, and manufacturers alike.
Open dialogue is essential to protecting that economic engine. If those closest to the resource cannot speak freely about what they see on the water, meaningful reform becomes far more difficult.
As a Florida-based manufacturer of technical poling skiffs, Hell’s Bay Boatworks is built on shallow-water ecosystems—places like the Indian River Lagoon, Florida Bay, and the Everglades. Our customers travel from around the world to experience these fisheries. Our craftsmen, guides, and families live here. Clean water is not an abstract issue for us; it is foundational to our livelihood and our legacy.
SupportingCaptains For Clean Water aligns with our core values: stewardship, transparency, and long-term sustainability. Protecting the right to advocate for water quality protects not just free speech—but Florida’s natural resources and the businesses that depend on them.
A Reminder of What Engagement Can Accomplish
The removal of Section 48 from SB 290 demonstrates that organized, informed, and respectful civic engagement can influence policy in meaningful ways. It underscores that protecting Florida’s waters requires both environmental restoration and the freedom to speak openly about challenges when they arise.
For those who make their living on Florida’s waters, that freedom is essential. And for companies like Hell’s Bay Boatworks, standing behind organizations that defend it is not optional—it is part of being responsible stewards of the resource that sustains us all.

Sometimes, our biggest competition is ourselves—because even a pre-owned Hell’s Bay flats skiff is still better than most boats out there. Built to last a lifetime… and then some!
* A boat doesn’t go into the mold until an owner has told us exactly how they would like it, and our craftsmen carefully bring it to reality at every step of the build process.
* Each one is custom built to a singular standard.
When you choose a Hell’s Bay skiff, you’re not just buying another shallow-water boat. You’re stepping into a legacy of craftsmanship and engineering that meets one of the most respected structural standards in boat-building: ISO 12215‑5.
Why That Standard Matters (and Why You’ll Appreciate It)
Let’s keep it simple: ISO 12215-5 is all about making sure your boat’s hull, deck and structure are built strong enough and smart enough to take whatever calm bay, chop or shallow-water adventure you throw at it. In plain terms, it means:
The structure is designed to manage loads, hits, impact, stress.
It uses recognized engineering principles, not guesswork.
It helps confirm that the boat was built right—not just by feel, but by spec.
Hell’s Bay takes this seriously. They’re fishing-guide born, craft-built, and their homespun roots meet engineering standards.
Hell’s Bay Skiffs: What You Get:
One-piece construction: Built from top-tier materials like Carbon Innegra and techniques, executed with the hands-on attention that guides demand.
Shallow-water mastery: Designed for inches, not feet. Drafts down to 3½″ in some models, so you can slip into places others can’t.
Built by people who fish and guide: That means the finish, the layout, the feel—they all come from real-world use. Not just a drawing board.
Engineering meets soul: Yes, these boats look great. But more importantly: the structure is backed by the same kind of engineering and construction the ISO standards demand.
How This Adds Value for You:
Peace of mind: You know the structure meets known good standards. You’re not hoping for “strong enough.”
Longevity: The stronger the build, the longer it holds up. Less worry down the road about fatigue, buckling, weird flex issues.
Resale & reputation: A Hell’s Bay crafted to high standards carries cred. When you say you own a Hell’s Bay, people nod—because they know what it means.
Real performance in harsh places: Whether you’re in skinny flats chasing tails or sneaking through mangrove channels, you’ve got a boat built for that kind of work.
What That Means for You:
1. Strength You Can Feel.
ISO 12215-5 sets rules for how a boat’s hull, deck, and internal structure must handle pressure, vibration, and impact. In plain English? Your Hell’s Bay is overbuilt for the kind of punishment real fishing delivers — hard runs across shallow flats, unexpected chop, or a long ride home against the wind.
2. Precision, Not Guesswork.
While some builders rely on “good enough,” we don’t. The ISO standard makes sure every curve, core, and joint in a Hell’s Bay skiff is engineered using proven formulas and materials — not just tradition, but science and tradition working together.
3. Lightweight Without Compromise.
Our one-piece composite construction, refined over years of testing, gives you the perfect blend of strength and shallow-draft agility. That’s how you get a skiff that poles like a feather, runs like a dream, and still feels rock-solid underfoot.
4. Lasting Value.
Boats built to ISO standards hold their integrity — and their value — year after year. It’s one of the reasons guides and serious anglers alike invest in Hell’s Bay. These skiffs don’t just fish better; they age better!
5. Confidence Everywhere You Go.
When you’re chasing tailing reds or bonefish in a stiff breeze, peace of mind matters. Knowing your boat is built to a recognized international safety and strength standards means you can focus on the hunt — not the hardware.
A Little Tradition, A Little Future:
Yes, we love the old-school way of boat-building—frames, stringers, hand inspections, craftsmen who know salt and sun. But standards like ISO 12215-5 were created because the sea doesn’t care how pretty your boat looks, it cares how it’s built. Hell’s Bay honors the tradition and brings in the modern standards.
That’s how you get a boat that feels timeless but also performs and lasts like something engineered for purpose.
That is why every Hell’s Bay skiff is built to the internationally recognized ISO 12215-5 standard — the same professional benchmark used to certify world-class vessels around the globe.
In short:
If you’re serious about shallow-water fishing, skip the “good enough” boat. ChooseHell’s Bay, built to proven structural standards, built for the long haul. You’ll thank yourself when the tide drops low, the flats whisper, and your skiff glides where others are stranded.
At Hell’s Bay Boatworks:
We don’t cut corners. We don’t chase trends. We build the world’s finest shallow-water skiffs — by hand, by experience, and to the highest international standards.
Because when you are miles from the ramp and inches from the bottom, there’s no substitute for a skiff that’s built right…

At Hell’s Bay Boatworks, we build boats with care, precision, with (ISO 12215-5 standards), and a nod to traditional boat-making values. So, it only makes sense that your boat should ride on a trailer crafted with equal thought and quality. That’s why we’re excited to announce that Amera Trail is now the official OEM trailer option for Hell’s Bay Skiffs — giving you a premium way to get afloat and stay that way.
Why Amera Trail? A Perfect Match for Hell’s Bay Skiffs!
Purpose-built for your boat. Amera Trail builds custom trailers to fit the exact specifications of each boat. Their “Preferred Fit” approach ensures proper alignment, balance, dry launch abilities (Skiff’s only) and support no matter which Hell’s Bay hull you choose.
Top-tier construction. Amera Trail uses heavy-duty aluminum soft edge channel frames, welded bunk brackets and cross members, isolated (for galvanic corrosion) torsion axles, and corrosion-resistant hardware — built for salt-water conditions and longevity.
Customizable to your needs. From LED lighting, disc-brake systems, custom logos, spare-tire setups, to walk boards and guide-pole covers — the trailer can be outfitted to suit your hauling, launching, and storage conditions.
Legacy of excellence. Amera Trail has been building custom trailers since 1986, with nearly 40 years of experience — a reputation built on craftsmanship, reliability, and attention to detail.
What This Means for Hell’s Bay Customers…
A true “turnkey” package. When you order a Hell’s Bay skiff, you can now include a purpose-built Amera Trail trailer — one that fits your boat’s hull precisely, performs reliably on Florida roads or saltwater ramps, and needs minimal modification.
Better protection & longevity. Aluminum construction with marine-grade components means less corrosion, less maintenance, and a trailer that will stay tough over years of towing, launching, and saltwater exposure.
Flexibility & personalization. Whether you store your boat in a tight garage, tow long distances, with stainless hardware for saltwater resistance, the custom options (some already included for Hell’s Bay Models) let you tailor the trailer to your lifestyle.
Enhanced peace of mind. A trailer engineered for your exact boat reduces stress on hull bunks, improves launch/retrieval consistency, and means safer transport — especially useful for skiffs that often double as working boats or guide boats.
How It Works — Ordering Made Simple!
When placing your order with Hell’s Bay, review our trailer option page and simply ask for the Amera Trail OEM trailer with your needed options.
We’ll coordinate with Amera Trail to build a trailer specifically for your boat’s hull dimensions and your preferred specs (brakes, wheels, spare tire, etc.).
Once built, we’ll deliver the boat and trailer together — ready to load, launch, and enjoy.
For those who believe a boat is only as good as its support — from hull to haul — adding the Amera Trail trailer as your OEM option offers a seamless, durable, and customizable solution. It’s more than just a trailer; it’s part of the Hell’s Bay experience!
We’re happy to offer this collaboration as part of our ongoing commitment to delivering the“World’s finest shallow water skiffs” — because excellence shouldn’t stop at the hull!

WE DON’T TAKE ORDERS, WE HAVE CONVERSATIONS:
We start by sitting down and talking through the essentials—where you fish, who you fish with, and how you like to do it. Side or center console? Tiller? Fly or bait? Every angler and guide have their preferences, and that’s exactly how we build them. Together, we design a boat that fits your style, your needs, and your waters. Then we craft a vessel that’s purpose-built for the way you fish.
